Just to catch all y'all up, Wanderite began in April of 2013 as a response to the creative stifling I was feeling at the time while wrapping up my thesis semester in graphic design. No complaints about the art department or anything [it's truly great], it's just that I had spent the last 3 years back in school putting off my own creative endeavors, pulling all-nighters, all the time, working on corporate-style projects...not my thang.
If I had to put a visual along with this recent memory, visions of a massive river bursting a levee come to mind...my inner creativity could be restrained no longer! I began focusing on drawings related to three of my favorite things: mountains, crystals and the natural order.
Mountains because well, let's get real, I'm from Mississippi. Elevation is terribly exciting when you're from a place as flat as Mississippi. My time in Boulder and Appalachia [Asheville mostly] only emboldened this love.
Crystals, for a number of reasons: 1) I spent a good chunk of my childhood [and beyond] rock hunting and crystal digging 2) the growing body of research on the healing properties of stones and minerals is fascinating 3) the use of gems and minerals since prehistoric times, also fascinating, and lastly 4) prior to finishing my BFA, my practice as a massage therapist and reiki healer incorporated crystals for healing when requested / necessary. Don't believe in stones ability to assist in healing? That's alright, at one point people did not believe in plants ability to heal either, and just look at us now! I'm always down for a good chitchat on crystals...hit me up!
The natural order of things / nature / balance: well honestly, this beautiful song explains this portion perfectly...
