If you haven't heard of a film called subSippi, it is absolutely worth the watch. The majority of folks would be shocked to learn that Mississippi is home to an incredible feast of cultural diversity.
Side note: Mississippi Modern Productions is the brain child of the creator of subSippi. While working on the project, meeting all the movers and shakers in Mississippi, he realized that all these amazingly talented, soulful people were too disconnected from one another.
It's a fact that most people in our country have a negative view of Mississippi. Sad face. Some really backwards things happen, as they do everywhere. Because we have always been portrayed as a backwards state, this stereotype is played out time and again in the media.
Most folks would be shocked to learn that Mississippi is home to a variety of progressive people, and has an unbelievably rich history. Many of the greats in literature, music, entertainment and art have called Mississippi home.
We have a Thich Nhat Hanh Buddhist monastery up north, a Hare Krishna Hindu ashram and temple down south, sustainable farms throughout, an LGBT Folk School and charity center, a thriving delta blues music scene, and the list goes on.
I can hardly express the richness of culture I have experienced growing up in Mississippi. I have lived out west and on the east coast in incredibly progressive cities and have not experienced the true diversity that Mississippi offers. I could tell stories for days...for now, enlighten yourself! Watch!
subSippi: An honest portrayal of Mississippi.
A search for diversity within a state that has otherwise gone unnoticed.
